Details for: Wilderness hike (Owl Trail with extension to the Tremel)

Brief description

The owl experience trail on the edge of the wilderness area - an experience for the whole family. After eight experience stations, there is a partly steep ascent on a hiking trail to the Tremel.

Description

In April 2012, the Owl Experience Trail of the Dürrenstein Wilderness Area was opened. It leads over two and a half kilometres through the Windischbachau and is an experience for the whole family. Remarkable facts about the five owl species found in the wilderness area (eagle owl, hawk owl, tawny owl, rough-legged owl and pygmy owl) are presented at the following stations along the trail:

  • From the egg into the wilderness
  • In the beginning was the egg
  • Where do owls breed?
  • Attention branchlings!
  • Hearing like an owl
  • Hunter of the Night
  • Owl Calls & Wingspans
  • Around the Ural Owl

There is also much to discover away from the stations: among other things, replicas of the five species of owls that occur as well as secrets of their breeding behaviour.  The scenic attractions and the structures of the second Vienna High Spring Water Pipeline also make a visit worthwhile.

After the last station follows the initially and centrally steep ascent up to the mountain ridge to Tremel at around 1,200m above sea level.
