Description

Over 900 years of monastic history are reflected in the historic Stift Herzogenburg. Its baroque reconstruction was built in 1715 by the famous Baumeister Jakob Prandtauer and Joseph Munggenast. The magnificent, now comprehensively revitalised monastery is the centre of life of the Augustiner-Chorherren. Traditionally, the Niederösterreichischen Kindersommerspiele (NÖKiss) also take place here every year.

The large art collection also houses valuable exhibits from the Gothic period to the present day. The festival hall, treasure chamber, library and coin cabinet as well as the baroque picture hall underline the great importance of the abbey to art history.

Stift Herzogenburg: Spiritual centre on the Camino de Santiago

The heart of Stift Herzogenburg is the collegiate church founded around 1014. It is regarded as the most important building of the Austrian late baroque period - and is home to a magnificent organ by Johann Hencke. Next to it is the Easter chapel for private prayer.

The abbey is surrounded by numerous gardens, such as the prelate garden with fountain and the flowering rose garden. The lovingly furnished monastery shop offers not only spiritual books and CDs, but also wines and fruit juices.

The abbey is also particularly popular for visiting on foot - after all, it is located directly on the Camino de Santiago (Purkersdorf-Göttweig section). That is why it has become a popular place of pilgrimage.
