Description
The 569 meter high Brandstetterkogel is the highest elevation on the Neustadtler Platte in the market town of Neustadtl an der Donau. It is located in the protected landscape area Strudengau in Lower Austria.
Location: Mostviertel, district Amstetten, market community Neustadtl, Strudengau
At an elevation of 519 meters above sea level, a viewing platform was erected on a hilltop of the Brandstetterkogel and a peace cross was erected. On another elevation at 532 meters above sea level is the Brandstetterkogelhütte, also called the Viktoria-Adelheid-Schutzhütte.
The hut is the destination point of the regional hiking trail Matrassteig.
Hikes to the Brandstetterkogel
- The Matrassteig, starting from the Greiner Donaubrücke, winds like a high mountain trail over almost 300 meters of altitude up to the Brandstetterkogel. A unique experience in the rugged slopes of the Strudengau. Duration approx. 1:45 h
- The 540 km long Danube Heights Circular Trail leading from Passau to Ybbs on the Danube leads along the Danube Heights Ridge through 60 villages and also past the Brandstetterkogel and the refuge. Duration approx. 8h
Sights in the surroundings
- In the region of Strudengau, the castle ruins of Freyenstein, which are under monument protection, are enthroned. It lies high above the municipality of Freienstein - and about 4 kilometers away from the town of Neustadtl on the Danube. Its wooded location on a narrow rocky ridge can be reached from the valley via an easy hiking trail.
- At the Nadlingerhof, a four-cornered farm dating back to the 15th century, visitors are introduced to rural culture and Mostviertel delights.
