Erlaufschlucht Purgstall

Outdoor adventure, Ponds, lakes and springs

Description

An essential element shaping the landscapes in and around Purgstall is the Erlauf gorge. Over the course of millennia, the river dug up to 10 metres deep into the gravel (conglomerate) that has accumulated since the last ice age (Würm).

The Erlauf gorge is located in the Natura 2000 area and was declared a natural monument in 1972 due to its unique topographical features and its wild, yet romantic water spots. Two observation decks protrude beyond one third of the Erlauf river inviting you to experience the elemental force of water and take a break to relax and take pictures.

The Erlauf Gorge can be accessed via Pratersteg trail. This tour leads for around 3.8 kilometres along the Erlauf Gorge without any major differences in level. Viewing platforms and bridges provide insights into the beautiful gorge landscape.
The Fischersteig trail also runs right on the edge of the water. The conglomerates and rock formations can be seen particularly well on the approx. 2 km long section. Sure-footedness and good footwear are required here.

The starting point for both trails is at the Erlaufschlucht car park next to the Purgstall bowling centre.
