In the heart of Lower Austria: A charming little winegrowing region with long tradition.
Small-terraced vineyards rolling softly up and down the hills, rustic wine taverns, idyllic cellar-lined roads, a rich cultural heritage and internationally renowned wines: The tempting Traisen Valley is the one and only winegrowing region in the Mostviertel.
Embedded between the southern river bank of the Danube and Lower Austria’s state capital St. Pölten, holidaymakers discover the mild side of Traisen Valley: Traisen-Donauland is Austria’s eldest and youngest winegrowing region at the same time. Archeological findings of grape seeds from the Early Bronze Age prove that wine has already been cultivated in this region since 4,000 years ago. Nevertheless, the area was not elevated to wine region status till 1995.
Formed by the grapes
Regardless whether in former centuries or in recent days: Viniculture has always been the determining aspect for designing the scenery of Traisen Valley. The landscape alternates between small-terraced vineyards and wide plains, full of flourishing fruits and vegetables. Standing on one of the smooth wine hills, one gets a perfect view of picturesque villages with their church spires always sticking out of a sea of wine grapes. Cycling and hiking trails (like Traisental cycle route and Weinriedenweg Traisental) wind their ways through the region and its cellar-lined roads. Of course, there is always time for making a stopover at some lookout towers (like Korkenzieher) or for discovering art treasures in the Augustinian monastery Herzogenburg (Stift Herzogenburg) and in the Old Town of St. Pölten.
A landscape full of culinary delights
The entire beauty of Traisen Valley because obvious during one of the walks with an experienced wine guide. The winemakers celebrate their full-flavoured Grüner Veltliners and their full-bodied Rieslings all year long, especially during Wine Spring (Weinfrühling) and Weinherbst. Holidaymakers enjoy the delicious homemade food with a glass of fruity white wine, served in one of the excellent wine heurigen taverns in the region.
